| | | During the 1980s, a number of independent organizations were formed in various large American cities in which women involved in the various aspects of commercial real estate joined together to exchange information, develop business relationships and help each other to succeed professionally. The unique aspect of these groups related not only to the fact that they were focused on women in an industry still mostly dominated by men, as men are also welcome as members, but also to the fact that these groups had assembled people having a great diversity of areas of expertise, all related to commercial real estate. In 1986 a federation uniting these different groups was formed on the East Coast of the United States . The first chapters of the CREW-National (Commercial Real Estate Women-National) network were created in Baltimore , Northern Virginia , Maryland (suburban), Philadelphia , Detroit and Washington DC . While the CREW-National network was forming, a similar federation was being created on the West Coast under the name WICRE-National Network (Women In Commercial Real Estate-national Network), with groups of members in the Los Angeles, Orange County, Phoenix, San Diego and San Francisco areas. The executive committees of these federations met and quickly realized that they shared common goals and had reached almost identical stages in the creation of their respective organizations. However, instead of interrupting the momentum and the energy within both federations, it was decided that each network would complete its organization separately while maintaining the possibility of a future amalgamation. This occurred in 1988. The CREW Network (formerly known as NNCREW) was thus officially launched on January 1, 1989 . | | |
